Welcome to South Americana

Well, hello there. Some of you may be familiar with my other blog Let’s Get Digital, some may not. It’s all good; this place is going to be very different as it’s an outlet for an altogether different obsession: South America.

It’s hard to imagine what I thought of South America before I visited there, but I’m sure it was the standard stereotypes of violent druglords, corrupt regimes, and hedonistic locals.

While those things hold true – to a very limited extent – there is also so much more to the continent, and one of the most fascinating aspects of South America is its history.

From swashbuckling heroes to comic-book villains, South American history reads like an old-school adventure story and I’m looking forward to sharing some of the stories I collected on two separate trips around the continent.

I first went to South America in 2005. I only intended staying for a couple of months before continuing on to New Zealand. However, within a few weeks, I knew I wasn’t going to leave until I ran out of money.

I managed to stretch it out for nine months, and by then I was fully addicted. Even though I traveled to some interesting and exotic places in subsequent years, South America never strayed from the forefront my mind; it gets under your skin.

Returning was an inevitability, and I was able to spend another nine months there in 2009. Although that time I had I good excuse: research. But we’ll talk more about that later.

Please excuse the mess while the builders are at work making the place all pretty. You’ll hear from me soon, and in the meantime, you can learn a little about me here or contact me here.

  1. What countries did you visit, David? I travelled the continent in 1971 for 18 months, and hope to (self publish?) a travel memoir about that adventure soon. I am from Guyana. Did you go there?
I remember you from AbsoluteWrite. I think they gave you a hard time there, if I remember rightly?

    • Hi Aruna, I remember you too

I took a couple of trips there. In 2005, I flew into Northern Brazil with the intention of spending a couple of months traveling around, then flying to Australia. But after a couple of weeks in Brazil, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere. I pretty much hugged the coast all the way down to Tierra del Fuego, then cut back up through Argentina/Chile/Boliva/Peru, before settling just shy of the Ecuador border to teach English in a small town for a few months.

On the next trip a few years later, I flew into Mexico, and slowly made my way around there before heading down through Central America. I took a boat from Panama to Colombia – the most amazing five days – and spent a short time in Colombia before flying to Buenos Aires and settling down to write for a few months. When summer came, it was too much in the city, and I parked myself on a beach in Brazil for another three months writing.

It was heaven. South America is in my blood now, and I long to return. Maybe even permanently one day if I can swing it. There are so many places I want to revisit (and so many places I haven’t seen yet (incl. Venezuela and the Guyanas – and I seem to remember you wrote a book about the latter). But mostly I just want to go back and soak it all up again.

I look forward to your travel memoir. I would LOVE to know more about what it was like back then! If you have any questions about the self-publishing process, make sure to email me: david dot gaughran at gmail dot com. (And yeah, AbsoluteWrite gives out some great advice on lots of different topics, but self-publishing isn’t one of them.)

  2. David, would you be interested in a guest post about Guyana? Please take a look at my blog-in-progress http://www.sharonmaas.blogspot.com to see some of the stuff I’ve done to date.
